There are similarities with a straight stairlift in so much that they generally use a single rail system and the stairlift installation is to the stairs and not the wall. The difference is all to do with the stairlift rail having to be custom-made to cope with the individual turns and the way the chair mechanism handles these curves. In addition, some stairlifts also have features like a drop nose to deal allow easy movement up narrow staircases when it is not being used.

What is a curved stairlift?
There are many houses that have quarter landings, small intermediate landings up the staircase or even bend at the beginning. A curved rail can in most cases be installed. Can stairlifts go around corners?
Yes, curved stairlifts can be fitted to most staircases including even spiral staircases. Shire Mobility offers a free quote and survey.
How much is a curved stairlift?
As all our curved stairlifts are bespoke and designed for each individual staircase, it is difficult to give an accurate cost. This being said, an average curved stairlift cost is in the region of £3,995 (which is cheaper than the average cost for a curved stairlift from a recent Which survey which came in at £4217). However, it does depend on how many bends in the staircase to what options a user requires.
As a general rule, curved stairlifts are frequently more expensive than straight stairlifts since there is more bespoke engineering that has to be taken into account regarding the more complex rail requirements for the perfect fit as well as the more sophisticated drive rack mechanism on the seat to tackle the angles.
Can a curved stairlift be installed in narrow curved staircases?

The Freecurve range of stairlifts have a maximum weight limit of 19.6st or 124.4kg and the Handicare 2000 is 18.2st or 115.5kg. There is a heavy-duty version of the 2000 that has a limit of 25st or 158.7kg.
Will you need to drill into my wall to fit the stairlift?
Absolutely not. Your stairlift is installed to the staircase only, so no drilling into the walls! It also means that it offers greater scope to choose against say the balustrade side as opposed to the wall which may be better in certain circumstances.
